In the realm of building with AMD hardware, the enduring AM4 processor socket has been a standout feature over the past few years, providing stability and compatibility for Ryzen CPUs for an impressive five-year span. AMD aims to uphold this legacy with the AM5 socket, introduced last year alongside the latest motherboards for the Ryzen 7000 series. Recent roadmaps suggest that AM5 is set to remain in use through at least 2025, with the possibility of an even longer lifespan.
In a recent video interview with AMD’s David McAfee, OverclockersUK delved into the company’s commitment to support the AM5 socket through 2025. McAfee, the VP and GM of Client Channel Business, affirmed, “It absolutely still stands. I think that we certainly recognize that the longevity of the AM4 platforms was one of the biggest reasons that led to the success of Ryzen. And as we think about the future, 2025 and beyond, that decision to move to a next generation of socket is one that’s going to be really thought through very, very carefully.”
McAfee went on to express openness to an extended support window, stating, “We are firmly committed to 2025, and beyond, and we’ll see how long that promise lasts beyond 2025.” This assurance is well-received news for users who have invested in, or are considering, B650 or X670 motherboards for the latest Ryzen processors, including the popular X3D variants tailored for gaming-centric builds.
