If holiday travels have you considering an AirTag for luggage tracking, the latest iOS 17 update brings good news. No need to purchase one if a friend or family member has a spare AirTag to share. With the release of iOS 17 on September 18, Apple introduced a helpful feature allowing you to share AirTags with up to five people.
Previously, AirTags could only be associated with one user at a time, making it impossible to lend or share them. If you traveled with someone who had an AirTag, you’d receive notifications about an unidentified AirTag. iOS 17 changes that, making shared AirTags a reality.
How to Share AirTags:
- Open the Find My app.
- Tap “Items” at the bottom of your screen.
- Select the AirTag you want to share.
- Tap “Add Person” under “Share This AirTag.”
Your iPhone will prompt you, indicating that once shared, others can locate the AirTag without generating unidentified-tracking notifications. Tap “Continue” to select individuals to share your AirTag with.
Once shared, the recipient receives a notification to add the AirTag, and they simply tap “Add” to include it in their Find My app. If you encounter a notification for a shared AirTag you don’t recognize during this process, tap “Don’t Add.”
How to Stop Sharing AirTags: When your AirTag is returned, you can stop sharing it by following these steps:
- Open the Find My app.
- Tap “Items” at the bottom of your screen.
- Choose the AirTag you want to stop sharing.
- Tap the person’s name with whom you want to stop sharing.
- Tap “Remove.”
Your iPhone will display a prompt indicating that the person won’t be able to locate your item, and they will receive unidentified-tracking notifications. Tap “Stop Sharing” to complete the process.
