The Hyundai Group, renowned for its groundbreaking electric vehicles, is spreading its wings into the realm of electric aircraft with the unveiling of its second-generation S-A2 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi. Unveiled by Hyundai’s advanced air mobility division, Supernal, at CES 2024, the S-A2 is set to grace the skies as early as 2028. This marks Hyundai’s strategic venture into the world of eVTOLs, building on its earlier collaboration with Uber Air and the debut of the Hyundai Urban Air Mobility SA-1 at CES 2020.

The S-A2, powered by a battery, boasts a V-tail fuselage capable of accommodating four passengers, their luggage, and a pilot. Eight rotors facilitate vertical takeoff, with the craft smoothly transitioning into a horizontal orientation for efficient fixed-wing flight once airborne. Designed for urban mobility, the eVTOL can take off from helipads, offering a quieter alternative to traditional helicopters, with noise levels comparable to a vacuum cleaner inside the cabin.

Supernal envisions the S-A2 as a complementary solution to commercial airlines, serving short-distance routes between city centers and airports. With an estimated flight range of 25 to 40 miles, a top speed of 120 mph, and a cruising altitude of 1,500 feet, the S-A2 promises efficient and swift urban transportation. The modular design ensures adaptability to evolving battery technologies, allowing for seamless integration of advancements such as faster charging and enhanced energy storage.
