CableMod’s angled cable adapter has triggered approximately $75,000 in damages across approximately 270 reported cases in the United States alone. In response to this alarming situation, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has taken decisive action, officially issuing a recall for the problematic plug following the manufacturer’s voluntary recall initiative.

The recalled adapter, bearing the name “12VHPWR-Adapter,” has exhibited a concerning tendency to overheat, leading to instances of burning or complete burnout. Such incidents pose a significant fire hazard, necessitating swift intervention to mitigate potential risks. Ironically, CableMod introduced and extensively marketed the angled adapter in response to initial reports of melting RTX 4090 connectors, a concern that has since subsided without necessitating a recall. Recent revisions to the 12VHPWR specification aimed to enhance the adapter’s compatibility with GPU power slots.

Consumers are urged to immediately discontinue the use of CableMod’s adapter, as emphasized by the US safety authority’s recall notice. The affected adapters were retailed by CableMod from February to December 2023, following which sales were voluntarily halted. Multiple variants of the adapter, available in various colors, have been identified as impacted by the recall.

In addition to outlining the recall procedure, CableMod has furnished a instructional video demonstrating the proper destruction of the angled “12VHPWR adapter” to render it unusable. Furthermore, a dedicated contact form has been made available to assist affected customers in navigating the recall process.
