If your PC makes noises that are more reminiscent of an avant-garde orchestra than a quiet working environment, it’s high time to listen more closely.

We’re used to our PCs humming and buzzing, but there are some noises you shouldn’t ignore as they can indicate serious problems. A high-pitched whine can be a sign of “coil whine,” a vibration of electrical components under load.

The noise can indicate poor-quality components that may fail sooner than expected. If the whistling only occurs under high load, such as when rendering videos, it is often harmless. If the noise is constant, you should have the component in question checked or have it replaced under warranty.

A humming fan noise is normally reassuring and a sign that your system is being cooled. However, if this noise turns into a buzzing roar, this is an indication that dust has accumulated on the fan blades or the bearings are worn.
