Speculation about Apple developing its own 5G modems has been ongoing for years. Despite a recent agreement extending Apple’s use of Qualcomm’s 5G modems through 2026, reports suggest Apple might be preparing to integrate its own chips sooner than expected. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, two new iPhones in 2025 could debut with Apple’s proprietary 5G modems: the anticipated fourth-generation iPhone SE and a slimmed-down variant of the iPhone 17.

Apple has invested significantly in developing its own modems, including acquiring Intel’s modem division for $1 billion in 2019. Despite ongoing speculation, previous iPhones have continued to use Qualcomm modems, with recent reports indicating that Apple’s modems might face further delays. Kuo’s insights suggest that the iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 17 Slim could be among the first to showcase this new technology. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to feature an updated design, possibly adopting an OLED display and eliminating the home button, while the iPhone 17 Slim might highlight a unique form factor with a titanium-aluminum frame and a simplified camera setup.
