Windows 11’s latest frustration comes in the form of intrusive pop-up notifications that users can’t seem to escape. Microsoft continues to find new ways to disrupt the user experience, and now it’s through these persistent, unavoidable reminders.

While many are still grappling with incessant update notifications, Windows 11 has added a new layer of annoyance with frequent prompts about cloud backups. Users are bombarded with messages informing them that their systems aren’t backed up with the built-in Windows backup solution. These notifications insist that backups are crucial to safeguard data in case something happens to the PC, almost coming across as a veiled warning.

In reality, Microsoft is pushing its OneDrive cloud service as the go-to option for backups. The notifications also double as advertisements for additional storage space on OneDrive.

When it comes to cloud storage, the free version of OneDrive provides just 5GB, which is quickly used up if you back up all your files. For $2 a month, you can upgrade to 100GB, and for $7 a month, you can get 1TB. (Annual plans offer discounted rates.)

It’s clear that Microsoft’s strategy is to nudge users towards OneDrive by making these backup notifications impossible to disable. While you can temporarily dismiss them, they inevitably reappear. This isn’t the first time Microsoft’s tactics have been frustrating, and it likely won’t be the last.
