Recent months have seen significant attention on flaws affecting Intel’s 13th- and 14th-generation desktop CPUs, and today marks a crucial step towards resolution. The first BIOS updates designed to fix these issues are now being released by major motherboard manufacturers Asus and MSI.
These updates involve a microcode patch aimed at addressing voltage errors in the Raptor Lake-series processors. The patch is delivered through motherboard UEFI-BIOS updates. MSI is leading the charge with updates for its high-end Z790 motherboards in the MAG, MEG, and MPG series, with more models from the 700-series and 600-series expected to receive the patch by the end of August.
Asus is also rolling out fixes, though initially through beta updates posted on its ROG forums. Current updates target Z790 boards in the Strix and Maximus series, as well as specific models like the Z790-AYW OC WIFI and ProArt Z790-Creator WiFi. Standard downloads will likely follow once beta testing is complete.
It’s important to note that these updates provide the official fix from Intel and are distinct from earlier measures taken by PC manufacturers to mitigate damage by resetting factory overclocks. While the new microcode aims to prevent further damage, it may not rectify issues already caused by the CPU flaws. As a result, other OEMs are expected to quickly implement the fix to minimize customer inconvenience and support costs.
If your CPU has already been impacted, consider exploring Intel’s expanded warranties, which now cover all Raptor Lake processors currently in use.
