Software developers across the industry are keen to leverage the AI capabilities of the hardware NPUs integrated into Copilot+ PCs. McAfee is among them, introducing a deepfake detector as its latest innovation.
The McAfee Deepfake Detector aims to combat disinformation by running quietly in the background, scanning videos for AI-generated content. If a video is identified as a deepfake, the service alerts the user with a warning, offering a layer of digital protection.
Currently, the Deepfake Detector is not included in McAfee’s standard antimalware package, McAfee Total Protection. Instead, it’s being rolled out exclusively to Lenovo customers who purchase select Lenovo PCs starting today. These customers will receive a free trial, with the option to continue using the service for $9.99 per year.
“At McAfee, we’re inspired by the transformative potential of AI and are committed to helping shape a future where AI is used for good,” said Roma Majumder, senior vice president of product at McAfee, in a statement. “Teaming up with Lenovo boosts our ability to deliver the most effective, automated, AI-powered deepfake detection, offering people a powerful digital guardian on their PCs. Together, we’re able to harness AI in new and revolutionary ways, empowering individuals with the most advanced deepfake detection so they can navigate the evolving online world safely and confidently.”
How McAfee’s Deepfake Detector Operates
Unlike traditional video analysis, McAfee’s Deepfake Detector focuses on audio. The tool listens to the audio track embedded within a video and uses AI to determine if it’s synthetic. This detection process occurs entirely on the local NPU, meaning no data is sent to the cloud, and user audio is never recorded. Users can also toggle audio detection on or off as needed.
In addition, McAfee is launching a Smart AI Hub to raise awareness about deepfakes. The hub allows users to contribute by uploading URLs that contain suspected deepfakes, helping to improve the AI’s accuracy over time.
As AI tools continue to evolve, including AI art and language models, McAfee’s new service could be a valuable addition to digital security. With election season approaching, this technology might become an essential tool for safeguarding information.
