David Holz, CEO of Midjourney, has announced that the AI image generation tool will soon be available for free to everyone, as shared in a recent Discord update. Midjourney, initially launched in 2022 as a Discord bot, transitioned into a dedicated website in 2023, allowing users to create AI-generated images from descriptive prompts. Initially, access to the web platform was limited to users who had generated over 10,000 images on Discord.
With this upcoming change, anyone can start using Midjourney by simply logging in with a Discord or Google account. Free users will be able to generate up to 25 images, after which they will need to upgrade to a paid subscription to continue. Midjourney offers four subscription tiers, ranging from $10 to $120 per month, each providing different levels of GPU time and additional features like stealth mode for private images. All plans also allow users to earn extra GPU time by rating other generated images and offer a 20% discount for annual subscriptions.
