At this year’s Gamescom trade show in Germany, Samsung has unveiled some exciting new gaming monitors, including OLED models in both 34-inch and 49-inch sizes. Notably, the Odyssey 3D has stolen the spotlight with its attempt to deliver 3D gaming and video without the need for traditional 3D glasses.
This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into glasses-free 3D. The technology has been explored before, notably with the Nintendo 3DS and its lenticular screen technology, which used slightly offset images to create a sense of depth. However, Samsung’s Odyssey 3D introduces a more advanced version of this technology, incorporating a new generation of lenticular display panels called “light field” panels, along with sophisticated eye tracking and view mapping technology. This setup uses cameras and visual sensors to dynamically adjust the display and maintain a 3D effect in real time.
The Odyssey 3D aims to overcome the limitations of earlier glasses-free 3D displays, offering a high refresh rate of 165Hz and a 1ms response time in its 27-inch and 37-inch models. It also supports AMD FreeSync Premium to minimize screen stuttering. Additionally, users can easily switch to a conventional 2D mode when 3D is not needed.
While Samsung’s prototype monitors look promising with their sleek design and adjustable stands, the company has yet to announce a release date or pricing. Previous attempts at 3D displays, like Acer’s, did not make a significant impact, so it will be interesting to see if Samsung can successfully bring this technology to the mainstream and at a price point that appeals to consumers.
