With Windows 10 support nearing its end, Microsoft appears to be using this time to experiment with the OS’s design — and to promote its other products in the process.
Recently, Microsoft has begun testing advertisements that go beyond just pushing Windows 11, expanding to include various other features and products. These ads are currently hidden in a Windows 10 beta version (specifically Insider Build 19045.4842), but an X/Twitter user managed to uncover some of these changes.
A Fresh Start Menu with a Promotional Twist
In this beta version of Windows 10, the Start menu has been given a slight makeover. On the surface, it’s designed to be more user-friendly, but there’s also a clear emphasis on creating space for ads.
One notable change is the repositioning of the account view to the top left, just below the list menu, to spotlight Microsoft 365. While the account view remains familiar, it now includes a banner encouraging users to purchase a Microsoft 365 license if they don’t already have one.
Not Unlike Windows 11’s Advertising Tactics
It’s no surprise that Microsoft is eager to promote its products within its own OS. We’ve seen similar tactics before, such as OneDrive ads, and more recently, Microsoft 365 promotions within the Start menu of Windows 11. Though these changes were frustrating for many users, they could at least be disabled.
As for whether these Start menu ads will make their way into the standard, non-beta version of Windows 10, that remains uncertain. Given Microsoft’s apparent caution in testing these features, it seems they’re aware of potential backlash. However, that hasn’t stopped them from pushing ads in the past — quite the contrary!
