The question of how many Steam Deck-style handhelds are too many remains unanswered as the market continues to see new contenders. The latest to join the fray is the Zotac Zone, which, while visually reminiscent of existing models, introduces some intriguing features that may set it apart.

The Zotac Zone sports a 7-inch AMOLED screen that offers a sharp 1080p resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Unlike many of its competitors, it does not require an upgrade for a vibrant display, delivering excellent color accuracy and contrast with 800 nits of brightness. This feature is particularly notable as even the Steam Deck’s OLED variant is only available at a premium price.

Design-wise, the Zone mirrors the Steam Deck with a similar control layout, including dual front touchpads, although these are absent on other models like the ROG Ally. The standout feature here is the built-in, wide-hinged kickstand, reminiscent of the Switch OLED, which enhances usability. The addition of an RGB lighting strip at the back adds a touch of flair that seems almost obligatory in this segment.

For those who appreciate a tactile gaming experience, the Zone includes a “clicky” D-pad, ideal for fighting games, and Hall effect triggers and thumbsticks that prevent stick drift without needing upgrades. Radial dials for volume and brightness offer precise control, and the triggers feature adjustable travel settings, akin to the Xbox Elite controller.

However, the internal specs are somewhat underwhelming compared to newer entries like the ROG Ally X. It features an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB M.2 2280 SSD, which is upgradeable. Unfortunately, the RAM is not user-upgradable, and the 48.5 watt-hour battery seems less competitive.

Unveiled at Computex and now making its appearance at Gamescom, the Zotac Zone is anticipated to release in September with a price tag rumored to be around $800.
