After initially focusing on integrating Windows Copilot, it seems Microsoft might be reconsidering the importance of the Copilot key as well.

In the latest Windows Insider Beta Channel build (Build 22635.4225), Microsoft has introduced a feature that lets users remap the Copilot key on their laptops. Instead of launching Copilot, you can now assign this key to open any other app of your choice through a new option found under Windows Settings > Personalization > Text Input.

This “Customize Copilot key on keyboard” setting is noteworthy for two reasons: first, its rollout in the Beta Channel suggests that it might soon reach the Release Channel and eventually all Windows PCs. Additionally, the fact that this change doesn’t require Windows to be configured to receive the latest updates right away implies Microsoft has settled on this feature as a standard option.

Previously, Copilot was a more integrated part of the Windows 11 experience, but it has since transitioned into a standalone app that’s still prominently featured on the desktop.

However, allowing users to reconfigure the Copilot key raises questions about how much emphasis Microsoft places on Copilot’s role and whether it’s transitioning from a general-purpose application to a more business-focused tool. This shift is notable, considering Microsoft announced the dedicated Copilot key just nine months ago.
