OpenAI has officially announced via X/Twitter that the much-anticipated Advanced Voice feature is now available for ChatGPT users. This thrilling update allows for more natural spoken-language interactions with the chatbot, bringing us one step closer to the reality depicted in films like Her.

Advanced Voice goes beyond mere text-to-speech capabilities; it utilizes the advanced GPT-4o technology to analyze the tone and speed of your voice, picking up on non-verbal cues such as body language. In response, ChatGPT generates replies infused with emotion, enhancing the conversational experience.

With the introduction of five new voices, ChatGPT feels more lifelike than ever. The faster response times create the illusion of real-time dialogue, while improvements also extend to accents in select non-English languages. Additionally, users can now provide custom instructions through Advanced Voice, and the memory feature persists throughout conversations.

This feature is currently being rolled out to all paid subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team plans, though it is not available to users in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein. As of this writing, a subscription to ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, granting access to special features like this one and faster response times.

Advanced Voice can only be accessed through the ChatGPT app on iPhones and Android devices, specifically in app versions 1.2024.261 and later. If you’re a paid subscriber yet don’t see the Advanced Voice option immediately, be patient. Notifications will be sent when the feature becomes available for your account, allowing you to dive in as soon as it does.

“[It] makes you realize how unnatural typing things into a computer really is,” remarked OpenAI’s Greg Brockman in a post on X/Twitter.
