Microsoft has rolled out the final security update for its Surface Duo 2 dual-screen smartphone, just days before the device’s official end of support on October 21, as reported by Windows Central.
First introduced in September 2020, the Surface Duo was Microsoft’s ambitious attempt to bridge the gap between smartphones and tablets. Its innovative dual-screen design, paired with a custom Android operating system, aimed to provide a seamless productivity experience on the go. However, the device struggled to gain widespread adoption due to a combination of software bugs, performance issues, and its premium price tag.
The Surface Duo 2, launched in October 2021, was intended to address the shortcomings of its predecessor, but it too faced harsh criticism. Despite improvements in hardware, the device suffered from many of the same issues, including limited software updates, which hampered its appeal. As a result, the Surface Duo line never managed to capture a significant audience, leaving it on the path to discontinuation.
With the end of support for the Surface Duo 2, Microsoft’s brief foray into foldable smartphones will join other discontinued mobile ventures like Windows Phone and Lumia, signaling the end of this unique chapter in the company’s mobile history.
