Sony Rumored to Be Developing a Portable PS5 for Gaming on the Go

The world of portable PC gaming has exploded in recent years, driven largely by the success of devices like the Steam Deck. And now, according to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony is reportedly jumping into the market for the first time since the PlayStation Vita, which was released over a decade ago.

This new portable gaming device is rumored to be much more than a phone derivative or streaming-only device like the PlayStation Portal. Instead, the speculation points to a full-on PlayStation 5 that would be capable of native gaming and could be used both as a portable console and hooked up to a TV — much like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck.

While details remain scarce, the development seems to come from the same team that created the PlayStation Portal, a device that allows streaming from Sony’s cloud service but lacks the power to run PS5 games directly. Sony may be considering the success of Valve’s Steam Deck and the growing demand for portable gaming as a way to breathe new life into the aging PS5 platform, particularly with the $700 PlayStation 5 Pro underperforming in the market.

This move comes as Microsoft also intensifies its exploration of portable gaming, though the company is currently more focused on portable PC gaming via hardware partners like Asus and Lenovo. Despite this, Sony’s potential foray into the portable gaming space could spark a serious challenge to Nintendo’s long-standing dominance in the handheld market.

For now, however, all of this remains speculation, and no official confirmation has been made by Sony.
