Microsoft has officially confirmed that its Mail, Calendar, and People apps will be discontinued, with support ending on December 31, 2024. Users of these apps will soon see notifications urging them to transition to the new Outlook app, as Microsoft shifts its focus entirely to this platform. However, the push for change extends beyond these apps. Business users of Microsoft 365 are now being encouraged to abandon the classic Outlook app in favor of the new Outlook, despite the latter still lacking several features found in its predecessor.
The transition to the new Outlook will start with an optional period, allowing users to switch at their own pace before being required to make the move. For Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Premium users, this process begins as early as January 2025. Enterprise users may enjoy a slightly longer grace period, with Microsoft planning to complete the transition by April 2026. However, classic Outlook installations obtained through perpetual and subscription licensing will continue to receive support until at least 2029, providing some reassurance for those reluctant to switch immediately.
Despite Microsoft’s assurances that missing features from the classic Outlook will eventually make their way into the new app, skepticism remains. Many users may choose to stick with the classic version for as long as possible, especially given its more comprehensive feature set. With a definitive “end date” for classic Outlook now established, it remains to be seen if Microsoft will deliver on its promise to enhance the new Outlook to meet user expectations.
