Google Rolls Out Gemini AI on Nest Speakers—Here’s How to Try It Out
Google has officially begun testing its Gemini AI on certain Nest speakers, and it’s now easier than ever for users to try out this advanced AI model. After some early hints from users hearing a different, more articulate voice on their Nest speakers, Google confirmed the rollout and provided details on how to access the test.
To get started with Gemini on your Nest speaker, here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Join the Google Home Public Preview Program: First, sign up for the public preview program by applying here, which is free of charge.
- Opt-In to Experimental AI Features: After you’re accepted, you’ll eventually receive an invite to opt in to experimental AI features via the Google Home app.
- Subscribe to Nest Aware: To unlock Gemini, you’ll need a Nest Aware subscription. The standard plan costs $8/month, or you can go for the $15/month Nest Aware Plus for extra benefits.
- Select the Right Nest Device: Not all Nest speakers are eligible. You’ll need either a Nest Audio or Nest Mini to participate in this test—Nest Hub devices aren’t included.
- Activate Voice Match: For personalized experiences, set up Voice Match via the Google Home app under Settings > Google Assistant > Voice Match.
Once you’ve set up everything, you’ll be able to test Gemini by asking broader, open-ended questions. For example, try asking “Hey Google, can giraffes talk to each other?” and listen for the chime that signals the switch to Gemini AI. You can also ask follow-up questions without the “Hey Google” prompt for a more natural experience.
Remember that while Gemini can provide more in-depth answers, Google still recommends double-checking its responses for accuracy, especially in critical areas like medical or financial advice.
