Classic Microsoft Apps to Sunset in 2024: Transition to New Outlook Underway
Microsoft has officially set the end-of-support date for its Mail, Calendar, and People apps: December 31, 2024. If you’re still using these apps, you’ll begin receiving pop-up notifications urging you to transition to the new Outlook app, which Microsoft is prioritizing going forward.
In parallel, Microsoft is intensifying its push for users to adopt the new Outlook, even as criticism mounts over its lack of key features compared to classic Outlook. Windows Latest reports that Microsoft 365 Business users are being encouraged to make the switch, with a phased approach starting in January 2025 for Business Standard and Premium users.
For Microsoft 365 Enterprise customers, the transition timeline is slightly extended, but Microsoft plans to complete the full migration to the new Outlook by April 2026. However, support for the classic Outlook app will remain available until at least 2029 for perpetual and subscription licensing users, providing a temporary reprieve for those hesitant to adopt the new interface.
Whether the missing features will be implemented in time remains uncertain. For now, users may prefer sticking to classic Outlook for as long as Microsoft allows.
