HDMI 2.2: What to Expect at CES 2025
As HDMI 2.1 continues to be the leading standard for PC and TV video interfaces, the next big step is already on the horizon. HDMI 2.2 is set to make its debut at CES 2025, scheduled for January 7-10, 2025, with an official announcement expected on January 6th.
Although details remain scarce, HDMI 2.2 promises a significant upgrade, with a focus on delivering higher bandwidth and supporting a broader range of resolutions and refresh rates, all facilitated by a new HDMI cable. HDMI 2.1 currently supports 48Gbps data transmission, enabling 120Hz refresh rates at 4K resolution, while competing with DisplayPort 2.1’s 80Gbps. If HDMI 2.2 aims to stay competitive, it will need to surpass that benchmark and reaffirm its dominance in the video interface space.
For consumers, this upcoming switch could add more complexity to the purchasing decisions for HDMI devices and cables. With new hardware releases, such as Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series and AMD’s RX 8000 series, potentially launching at CES 2025, the question remains whether HDMI 2.2 will be part of these offerings.
