Nvidia App Causes Performance Drops in Games, Leading to Workaround Solutions

After Nvidia launched its new app last month, it seemed like a major upgrade over GeForce Experience, promising smoother updates and optimizations without the need for logging in. Unfortunately, the app is causing unexpected performance drops in some games, with users reporting reductions of up to 15 percent in frame rates. Testing by Tom’s Hardware confirmed these reports, highlighting significant performance issues.

The worst-hit title in the benchmarks was Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which saw a 12 percent performance drop at 1080p Ultra and 6 percent at 1440p Ultra on an RTX 4060. Enthusiast-level GPUs like the RTX 4080 Super are experiencing even more significant losses, with one user reporting a 15 percent dip in Black Myth: Wukong. Tom’s Hardware speculates that the issue may disproportionately affect high-end GPUs.

Nvidia responded to the issue, attributing the performance drop to the Game Filters and Photo Mode features in the app. These settings impact game performance even when they are not actively in use. The company suggests disabling these options as a temporary solution while they work on a fix. Tom’s Hardware has confirmed that this workaround restores normal performance. Alternatively, users can uninstall the Nvidia App and manually install drivers to avoid the issue.

If you’re still using GeForce Experience, you may not face these performance drops, but you’ll be stuck with outdated drivers. The last update available through GFE is version 566.14, and to get the latest drivers, users must either endure the Nvidia App performance issue or manually install updates.
