If you don’t feel like reading subtitles when streaming your favourite shows or movies that don’t already offer dubbing, you may soon not have to.
Amazon has announced that it will start testing adding AI dubbing to licensed content that is usually not dubbed.
The new dubs being tested are not entirely produced by AI. Human translators are also involved in the process to ensure that the dubs are of a certain quality.
Initially, the AI-dubs will only be available in English and Spanish for 12 films and series, including El Cid: La Leyenda, Mi Mamá Lora, and Long Lost.
Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios chief technology officer Raf Soltanovich gave the following quote on the new feature:
“At Prime Video, we believe in enhancing customers’ experiences with practical and useful AI innovations… We’re eager to explore a new way to make shows and films more accessible and entertaining.”
Traditionally, dubbing is done by voice actors – as seen in other popular global series such as Squid Game. This move from Amazon signifies a shift towards AI, something becoming increasingly popular, and controversial.
The feature can be turned on either by navigating to the Language tab under Accounts and Settings on PC, under My Stuff on the smartphone app, or under the Prime Video settings section on the TV app.
