Update Firefox Now to Avoid Extension and Streaming Issues

If you use Firefox as your primary web browser, it’s crucial to check which version you’re running, as an upcoming certificate expiration could disrupt your browsing experience. On Friday, March 14, some browser extensions and streaming services may stop working on older versions of Firefox due to the expiration of a critical root certificate.

This certificate plays a key role in maintaining secure web connections, but more importantly, it also includes Digital Rights Management (DRM) components essential for services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. Without it, Firefox may struggle to verify certain security protocols, rendering DRM-protected content unplayable. Additionally, built-in security tools within the browser could be affected, potentially compromising your browsing safety.

Which Firefox Versions Are Affected?

All Firefox versions older than Firefox 128 or Firefox ESR 115.13 will be impacted by this change. If you haven’t updated your browser since early 2024, or if you’re in a workplace where updates are delayed, now is the time to take action to ensure your browser continues functioning properly.

How to Check and Update Your Firefox Version

To verify your Firefox version:

  1. Click the three-line menu (☰) in the top right corner of Firefox.
  2. Navigate to Help > About Firefox.
  3. You’ll see the currently installed version displayed in the window.

If your version is older than Firefox 128 or Firefox ESR 115.13, update immediately. You can do this by using the built-in update checker in the “About Firefox” window or by downloading the latest version directly from Mozilla.

What About Firefox on Android?

If you also use Firefox on an Android device, you should update it to avoid similar issues. Here’s how to check:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings > Apps.
  2. Find Firefox in the app list (or use the search bar).
  3. Tap on Firefox, then scroll to the bottom to see the installed version number.

If your version is outdated, update the app via the Google Play Store as soon as possible.

Stay Ahead of Browser Issues

By keeping Firefox updated, you can ensure continued access to your favorite extensions, streaming services, and security features without disruption. Don’t wait until issues arise—check your version now and update if necessary to stay protected and fully functional.
