Microsoft’s Latest Security Updates Cause Issues for Office 2016 Users
Yesterday, Microsoft rolled out important security updates for a range of its apps and operating systems, including KB5055523 for Windows 11 24H2 and KB5055518 for Windows 10. While these updates addressed critical security vulnerabilities, they’ve also introduced new problems, particularly for users of older software.
According to Windows Latest, the KB5002700 update for Office 2016 is causing significant issues. Several users, especially those on Windows 10 and 11, have reported that apps within the Office suite are crashing. Specifically, Word and Excel freeze when trying to create new documents, while Outlook crashes when accessing the calendar view.
As of now, Microsoft has not acknowledged the issue on the official support page for the update. Since Office 2016 is nearing the end of its lifecycle—almost nine years old—it seems unlikely the company will prioritize a fix for these crashes.
If you’re still using Office 2016 and experiencing these crashes, you’ll have to wait for a potential follow-up patch from Microsoft. In the meantime, you might consider upgrading to Office 2024 or switching to a Microsoft 365 subscription. For a detailed comparison between the two options, check out our guide.
