Windows 11 Surges as Windows 10 Sees Record Decline
The latest Statcounter figures for March 2025, reported by Neowin, reveal a major shift in the Windows market. Windows 11 is rapidly closing the gap with its predecessor, and if current trends persist, it could soon become Microsoft’s most widely used operating system.
March was particularly brutal for Windows 10, which experienced its largest single-month decline ever, dropping 4.43 percentage points. This leaves Windows 10 at 54.23% market share among Windows users worldwide. Meanwhile, Windows 11 experienced its most significant growth in three years, increasing 4.53 percentage points to reach 42.66% of all Windows PCs. While Windows 10 still holds the lead, Windows 11’s rapid adoption rate suggests that a major crossover is imminent.
A key factor in this shift appears to be Microsoft’s persistent reminders that Windows 10 will reach end-of-support in October 2025. With only six months remaining, users are beginning to make the transition to avoid potential security risks. Those who choose to remain on Windows 10 after support ends will either need to purchase extended security updates (ESUs) or risk exposing their systems to unpatched vulnerabilities.
For users still running Windows 10, the clock is ticking. Upgrading to Windows 11 now ensures continued security updates and compatibility with future Microsoft services. If not, be prepared to pay for extended support or take on the risks of an unsupported OS.
