Google’s Gemini AI Is Heading to the Classroom This Fall

As the 2025 school year wraps up, Google is already looking ahead to the next academic season with the announcement of a powerful new AI education tool: Gemini for Education. Introduced during the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference, the tool is designed to help students and educators integrate generative AI into the learning experience.

Gemini for Education will be available at no extra cost as part of existing Workspace for Education plans. Google says the service will come with enterprise-level data protections, higher usage limits than standard consumer offerings, and a fully admin-controlled interface. Schools and teachers will also be able to create custom “Gems,” which are personalized AI assistants tailored to specific subjects or tasks.

To support different learning styles, Google is also expanding its NotebookLM platform. Students can upload documents and receive Audio Overviews, as well as Video Overviews for visual learners—an enhancement that aligns with Google’s broader push to make AI tools more accessible and versatile in the classroom.

While the core Gemini for Education tools are free, Google will offer a paid Workspace with Gemini add-on for $18 per user per month, with discounts available for educational institutions. This version includes advanced features such as Veo 3, a text-to-video model capable of generating 8-second video clips, which educators can use to create engaging visual content—even memes—to connect more effectively with students.

Yet, the rollout of AI in education remains a double-edged sword. Many teachers remain wary of AI’s potential to facilitate cheating, especially during assessments. Last year, some educators responded by returning to handwritten tests to curb misuse. Now, the challenge is balancing innovation with integrity.

Whether Gemini becomes a trusted teaching companion or raises new questions in classrooms, one thing is clear: Google is betting big on AI becoming a standard fixture in the education system by the time school resumes this fall.
