Windows 11 Restore Points Will Now Expire After 60 Days

Windows 11 users who rely on system restore points to recover from issues will need to stay more alert: Microsoft is shortening how long those backups are kept. As part of the June update for Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft has announced that system restore points will now be deleted after 60 days—down from the previous 90-day retention period.

In an update detailed on its support page, Microsoft wrote:

“After installing the June 2025 Windows security update, Windows 11, version 24H2 will retain system restore points for up to 60 days… This 60-day limit will also apply to future versions of Windows 11, version 24H2.”

This change affects any restore point created after applying the June 2025 update, meaning users looking to roll back to a previous system state should be aware that older points may vanish faster than expected. The policy is expected to carry forward to Windows 11 25H2, set to launch in fall 2025.

✅ How to Create a Restore Point in Windows 11:

  1. Type “recovery” in the Start menu and select “Create a restore point.”
  2. In the System Protection tab, click Configure and ensure “Enable System Protection” is checked. Click OK to confirm.
  3. To manually create a restore point, click Create, enter a name like “System – June 23, 2025”, then click Create again.

While Windows 11 does automatically create restore points before updates, manually saving one after major system changes is always a good safety net—especially now that they’re on a tighter expiration timeline.
