You probably think it’s impossible to “eject” your graphics card while using your computer — and for most desktop or laptop setups with internal GPUs, that’s true. But some Windows 11 users recently got a surprising prompt asking if they wanted to eject their graphics card. Yikes.

This is actually a weird Windows bug. Somehow, Windows is listing discrete graphics cards inside the “Safely remove hardware and media” menu — the same tool you’re supposed to use when unplugging a flash drive (which, let’s be honest, most people never do). So, seeing an option to eject your expensive, built-in GPU understandably freaked some folks out.

The root cause seems to be Windows exposing a way to disable the discrete GPU to save power by switching to integrated graphics. But “disabling” and “ejecting” are very different actions, and Windows is unfortunately mixing up the terms in its user interface. Windows Central says you can tweak the registry to hide this confusing option if you want.

While it’s not a critical bug, it’s easy to see why it worries even tech-savvy users. One Redditor said, “I’m scared I’ll accidentally eject it one day and who knows what might happen to my laptop.” If you’re seeing this message but don’t want to mess with registry hacks, the best advice is just to ignore it and carry on.
