Asus has confirmed that its older ROG Ally and Ally X handheld gaming PCs will receive the revamped Windows 11 gaming interface featured in the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally models. This new version of Windows, developed in collaboration with Microsoft, focuses on optimizing the experience for portable gaming devices by introducing a more streamlined and controller-friendly interface. Microsoft had previously announced plans to bring this updated gaming environment to other Windows-based handhelds starting in 2026, but Asus’ confirmation provides assurance for existing ROG Ally users that they won’t be left behind. The company made the announcement at Gamescom 2025, where spokesperson Whitson Gordon stated that the updated interface will eventually roll out to current Ally owners, though not simultaneously with the launch of the Xbox-branded models.

Details on which specific features will make their way to the older devices remain scarce, but the update is expected to be a significant undertaking. Asus currently uses a custom software layer, including its Armoury Crate suite, on top of Windows 11 to optimize the ROG Ally’s user experience. Integrating Microsoft’s new gaming-focused Windows build may require major adjustments to this software stack. While some users may prefer to retain Armoury Crate’s functionality, others are likely to call for an option to perform a clean install of the updated OS once it becomes available. The timing of the update rollout remains uncertain, but for now, existing ROG Ally owners can rest assured they will eventually gain access to Microsoft’s improved handheld gaming platform. Meanwhile, the new ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X are scheduled for release on October 16, with pricing still under wraps amid ongoing market uncertainties.
