Micron’s First PCIe 6.0 SSDs Leave Consumer Drives in the Dust

PCI Express 6.0 has finally made its debut in solid-state storage thanks to Micron, which has officially begun shipping its groundbreaking Micron 9650 SSDs. These drives boast blazing sequential read speeds of 28,000 MB/s and sequential write speeds of 14,000 MB/s—doubling the performance of some of today’s fastest PCIe 5.0 SSDs. However, the catch is that these new drives aren’t designed for desktops or gaming rigs. Instead, they’re tailored for demanding AI data center workloads such as model training and inference, where maximum speed and endurance are paramount.

The Micron 9650 SSD family is available in two configurations: the PRO version optimized for read-intensive tasks, and the MAX variant designed for write-heavy operations. Capacity options span from 6.4TB all the way up to 30.72TB, offering immense storage density in high-throughput environments. These drives leverage a PCIe 6.2 interface and are built on Micron’s ninth-generation six-plane flash memory architecture, which allows for industry-leading random read performance of 5.5 million IOPS and random writes of 900,000 IOPS. Endurance is also exceptional, with up to 58,300 terabytes written sequentially in some models.

Of course, power and speed come at the cost of heat, and Micron has addressed thermal concerns accordingly. While many SSDs today rely on passive heat spreaders, the 9650 family includes models designed for active air cooling and even features a 9.5mm variant that supports liquid cooling—an increasingly common necessity in high-density server environments. These design choices reflect the growing need for thermal management as performance scales upward.

While this may be the first PCIe 6.0 SSD on the market, don’t expect to see it in consumer PCs any time soon. Current motherboards and processors from AMD and Intel haven’t adopted the PCIe 6.0 standard, so it’ll likely be some time before this level of speed trickles down into everyday use. Until then, enthusiasts will have to watch from the sidelines as data centers take the lead with next-gen storage.
