Microsoft is preparing to sunset one of its most popular mobile utilities: the Microsoft Lens app. First launched in 2014 under the name Office Lens and rebranded in 2021, Lens has been a staple tool for mobile document scanning and image conversion, amassing over 50 million downloads on Android alone and earning a 4.8-star average rating across platforms. Its capabilities extend well beyond simple scanning, allowing users to convert images into PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, or PowerPoint presentations; digitize handwritten notes; and save files directly to OneNote or OneDrive.
Now, Microsoft has confirmed a gradual phase-out that will begin in mid-September. From that point, new updates will stop rolling out. By mid-October, Lens will be removed from both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store, making it unavailable for new installations. Mid-November marks the next milestone, when the app will disappear entirely from both marketplaces. Finally, by mid-December, existing users will lose the ability to create new scans within the app, effectively ending its functionality.
Microsoft is encouraging existing Lens users to transition to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which integrates scanning alongside AI-assisted productivity tools. However, for many, the shutdown will mark the end of a streamlined, dedicated scanning experience that has been a go-to for nearly a decade.
