Proton has introduced a new Emergency Access feature that gives users peace of mind by letting them designate up to five trusted contacts who can access their Proton account if something unexpected happens. The system is designed for situations such as extended travel, illness, or even death, where someone else may need access to your secure information.
There are a few important requirements and safeguards built into this feature. For starters, your trusted contacts must already have a Proton account of their own in order to be granted access. Once access is attempted, you’ll receive a notification. If you do not deny the request, the system will automatically allow your contact in. You can also set a waiting period—ranging from days to months—before access is granted, adding another layer of flexibility.
Proton emphasizes that Emergency Access is only available to paying customers across its services, including Proton Pass, Mail, VPN, and Drive. Any premium subscription qualifies, but those who want the complete package can opt for Proton Unlimited at $9.99 per month to unlock full access across all Proton apps.
