Swiss tech company Proton, known for its privacy-focused software, has just released Proton Authenticator, a new open-source two-factor authentication (2FA) app. Like popular 2FA apps such as Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, and Authy, Proton Authenticator generates secure login codes to protect your accounts. What sets it apart is its open-source nature, top-tier security and encryption, and a strict no-ads, no-tracking policy.

Proton Authenticator is available across all major platforms—Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. This cross-platform support includes desktop versions, a rarity in the 2FA world where even Microsoft and Google don’t offer desktop apps. Plus, with a free Proton Account, users can sync their 2FA tokens seamlessly between devices.

This launch is especially good news for privacy-conscious users wanting to move away from big tech, as well as anyone seeking a desktop 2FA solution. Proton also provides other privacy-first services like Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass.
