Chinese storage manufacturer Biwin has introduced a groundbreaking new storage format known as the Mini SSD, or “1517,” which aims to bring ultra-fast data performance to devices where size limitations have traditionally restricted storage options. Measuring only 15mm by 17mm with a slim 1.4mm profile, the Mini SSD is only marginally larger than a microSD card, yet it manages to deliver read speeds of up to 3,700 MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,400 MB/s through a PCIe 4×2 interface. This makes it significantly faster than traditional microSD cards and opens the door for new possibilities in compact laptops, handheld gaming consoles, cameras, and even smartphones. Beyond performance, Biwin designed the Mini SSD for durability as well, giving it an IP68 rating for resistance against water and dust, along with the ability to withstand drops of up to three meters. Unlike conventional storage cards, it uses a SIM card–style tray mechanism, allowing for quick and secure installation. While the company has yet to announce pricing or availability, the technology is already being adopted by next-generation Chinese handheld gaming PCs like the GPD Win 5 and OneXPlayer Super X, signaling that this tiny but powerful storage solution may soon become a mainstream option in portable electronics.
