Despite some eye-catching headlines, no, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is not suing his own company. Instead, the lawsuit comes from another man with the same name: American attorney Mark Stephen Zuckerberg, who claims that Meta has unfairly shut down his Facebook account multiple times over the years.
According to reports, Zuckerberg the lawyer has tried to promote his law firm on Facebook, only to have the platform disable his account five times in the past eight years. Each time, Meta apparently flagged him for impersonating CEO Mark Elliot Zuckerberg. The situation became even more frustrating when Facebook continued charging him for advertising after his account had already been taken offline. That was, as the saying goes, the straw that broke the camel’s back—and it’s what pushed him to take Meta to court.
On his personal website, iammarkzuckerberg.com, the attorney shares anecdotes about what it’s like to live with the same name as one of the most famous figures in tech. Among other things, he says he can’t make restaurant reservations without being assumed to be a prank caller, and he often receives letters from people offering unsolicited advice for Facebook. For him, the name is more curse than blessing—and now, it has set the stage for a legal battle with one of the largest companies in the world.
