Anthropic has rolled out an upgraded version of its smallest AI model, Haiku 4.5, offering companies a powerful yet low-cost alternative to high-end systems like its Opus model. The new model is roughly one-third the cost of Sonnet 4 and fifteen times cheaper than Opus, while performing equally well or better in many key benchmarks, including coding.

Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger said Haiku 4.5 is designed for businesses that want scalable AI solutions without the steep expenses tied to massive models. “Traditional companies are more likely to adopt AI if they can experiment with smaller, more economical systems,” Krieger said.

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, has rapidly emerged as a major player in the AI market. The company, valued at $183 billion, reports a $7 billion annualized revenue run rate and more than 300,000 enterprise clients, accounting for 80% of its income. Its AI assistant, Claude, continues to attract paid users in both consumer and professional segments.

The release marks the first major update to the Haiku line in a year and reflects a broader industry trend toward cost-efficient AI adoption. Many firms are now combining smaller models for routine tasks with large, advanced models for strategic work — a hybrid approach that maximizes performance while keeping costs manageable.
