ASML has appointed Marco Pieters, a 25-year company veteran, as its new chief technology officer, succeeding Martin van der Brink, who retired earlier this year. Pieters will join ASML’s management board following expected shareholder approval at the April 2026 meeting.

Pieters has held senior roles across ASML’s product divisions, including leading its Holistic Lithography program, which combines advanced optics and software to refine chip patterning. CEO Christophe Fouquet said Pieters’ expertise will be key in continuing ASML’s push to expand its technology roadmap and maintain its industry dominance.

Van der Brink’s tenure transformed ASML into the undisputed leader in lithography systems, outpacing Japan’s Nikon and Canon through breakthroughs in EUV technology — vital for producing the world’s most advanced chips.

ASML’s lithography tools, which can cost up to $400 million, are critical for the AI and semiconductor sectors, and Pieters’ appointment is seen as ensuring continuity in innovation and leadership.
