Elon Musk is preparing to take on Wikipedia with a new project called Grokipedia, an AI-driven encyclopedia being developed by his company xAI. The announcement was made via Musk’s social media channels, where he described the initiative as a platform that will aim to uncover and present “truth,” building on the foundation of his AI chatbot, Grok. The name itself directly ties to the chatbot, which Musk has positioned as a more honest and objective alternative to existing AI tools.
The move comes after years of Musk openly criticizing Wikipedia, accusing the user-driven platform of political bias and a lack of objectivity. His long-standing frustration with the site has now evolved into a direct challenge, with Grokipedia intended to function much like Wikipedia thematically, but supplemented by AI to filter, analyze, and present information in what Musk claims will be a more balanced way. His close associate David Sacks, who also serves as an AI advisor to President Donald Trump, recently echoed Musk’s criticisms, labeling Wikipedia “hopelessly biased” and questioning its use as a training source for artificial intelligence.
However, Grok itself has not been free of controversy. The chatbot has made headlines for producing anti-Semitic content, which Musk and his team attributed to faulty programming. Analysts, though, have raised concerns that behind-the-scenes interventions strongly influence Grok’s responses, casting doubt on whether Grokipedia will truly be the unbiased knowledge repository Musk promises. For now, Grokipedia remains in development, with no clear timeline for release or confirmation on whether it will be made publicly accessible.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of Musk’s ongoing legal battles. In August, he sued Apple and OpenAI, accusing them of conspiring to suppress Grok and other xAI products by manipulating App Store rankings and delaying approvals. At the time, ChatGPT topped the iOS charts, while Grok trailed in 22nd place and Musk’s social media platform X sat at 28th. Musk argues that the tight integration of ChatGPT into iOS distorts competition, although Apple has stated that it plans to support a broader range of AI models in the future. Whether Grokipedia can break through in such a competitive and controversial environment remains to be seen.
