Microsoft has officially rolled out a comprehensive redesign of its Microsoft 365 app icons, marking one of the most significant visual updates to the Office suite in years. The new design emphasizes vibrant color gradients, improved contrast, and softer, more fluid shapes, making the icons feel approachable and modern while preserving their immediate recognizability. This update is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to harmonize its design language across the Office ecosystem and align it more closely with the visual identity of its AI Copilot tools.

Jon Friedman, Microsoft’s CVP of Design and Research for Microsoft 365, highlighted the outsized importance of icons in shaping user experiences. Even small symbols act as gateways to complex applications and features, conveying brand identity while guiding users intuitively. The redesign follows four main principles: delightfully simple, fluid shapes, rich and colorful palettes, and instantly recognizable branding. For instance, Word’s icon has gone from four horizontal bars to just three, improving clarity at small sizes and creating a cleaner, more streamlined look. Across the suite, sharp edges and static lines have been replaced by smooth folds and gentle curves, giving each icon a sense of motion, energy, and approachability.

Color has been a central focus of the redesign. Where previous versions used subtle gradients, the updated palette features richer and more vibrant tones, with exaggerated analogous transitions that improve both accessibility and visual impact. This makes the icons pop on screens of all sizes, whether on desktop, tablet, or mobile devices. Letter plates, long a key element for brand recognition, have been retained but now integrate more cohesively with the new design system, striking a balance between legacy identity and modern visual cohesion.

The influence of Copilot is evident throughout the redesign, reinforcing Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to tie AI features directly into the user experience. The update signals a broader shift in Microsoft 365’s visual identity, where icons not only represent applications but also embody the suite’s connected and AI-augmented workflow. The rollout has begun immediately, giving users a brighter, more dynamic, and visually unified Office suite experience that merges heritage, modernity, and AI awareness.
