A new WhatsApp scam is circulating that could put your personal data at serious risk. Users are receiving messages from unknown numbers, often with no profile name, containing nothing more than a photo and a question like, “Is that you?” or “Do you know this person?” The goal is to trick you into downloading the image, which appears harmless but is actually malware-laden. Once opened, scammers can potentially gain access to your smartphone, tablet, or PC, stealing data or even using it for blackmail.
The scam exploits a vulnerability in WhatsApp’s image handling. When you download an image, the app breaks it into smaller packages for processing. Malicious actors can inject malware into these packages, which runs silently in the background. This means that even without obvious signs, your device and WhatsApp account can be compromised.
To protect yourself, never open images from unknown or untrusted contacts. Always block suspicious numbers and disable automatic media downloads by going to Settings > Storage and data > Auto-download media and deselecting all file types. Keeping WhatsApp updated is also critical, as updates patch known vulnerabilities, reducing the risk of exploitation. Vigilance is key—if something feels off, don’t open it.
