Sony has increased its full-year profit forecast by 8% to 1.43 trillion yen ($9.5 billion), supported by stronger performance in its anime, music, and semiconductor businesses and a smaller-than-expected hit from U.S. tariffs.
The company’s operating profit rose 10% in the second quarter to 429 billion yen, helped by higher chip sales and the box office success of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle.”
While its gaming division saw a decline due to losses linked to “Destiny 2”, Sony sold 3.9 million PS5 units and plans to grow its install base during the year-end season. Meanwhile, its new title “Ghost of Yotei” reached 3.3 million sales in just weeks.
Sony’s chip unit benefited from strong demand for smartphone image sensors, and the company now expects tariff losses of 50 billion yen, down from earlier estimates. It also announced a 100 billion yen share buyback, sending its stock up 5.5%.
