China’s commerce ministry said on Thursday it will assess and investigate Meta Platforms’s acquisition of artificial intelligence startup Manus, signaling heightened regulatory scrutiny over cross-border technology deals involving Chinese-linked assets.
Ministry spokesperson He Yadong said at a regular press briefing that companies involved in activities such as foreign investment, technology exports, overseas data transfers, and acquisitions must comply with Chinese laws and regulations.
He added that the commerce ministry will work with relevant government departments to conduct a formal assessment and investigation into whether Meta’s acquisition of Manus is consistent with China’s legal and regulatory framework.
The announcement follows growing attention from Chinese authorities on outbound transfers of advanced technologies, particularly in the artificial intelligence sector, amid broader geopolitical tensions and efforts to safeguard sensitive data and strategic capabilities.
Meta has not publicly commented on the ministry’s statement. The move adds further uncertainty around the transaction, which has already drawn scrutiny over potential technology export and data governance issues.
