X, owned by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, was largely back online on Friday after a widespread outage disrupted service for tens of thousands of users worldwide, according to data from outage-tracking website Downdetector.
At the height of the disruption, more than 74,000 users in the United States reported problems accessing the platform at around 10:14 a.m. ET. By 12:34 p.m. ET, that figure had dropped sharply to about 4,000 reports, suggesting service was steadily being restored.
Downdetector notes that its figures are based on user-submitted reports, meaning the actual number of affected users may differ. X did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, and the company has not disclosed the cause of the outage.
The disruption was felt internationally. In the United Kingdom, outage reports fell to around 440 from a peak of more than 14,000, while reports in India declined to roughly 500. Canada also saw a noticeable easing in reported issues as the platform recovered.
Friday’s incident follows another outage earlier this week, when more than 28,300 users in the United States and over 8,000 in the UK reported problems accessing X. The repeated disruptions highlight ongoing reliability challenges for the platform as it continues to evolve under Musk’s ownership.
