Walt Disney has named theme parks head Josh D’Amaro as its next chief executive, ending years of uncertainty around succession and ushering in a new leadership era as artificial intelligence and industry consolidation reshape media and entertainment. D’Amaro, 54, will take over from Bob Iger at Disney’s annual investor meeting on March 18.

Iger, who led Disney through landmark acquisitions including Pixar and Marvel, will remain a senior adviser and board member until his retirement at the end of the year. Disney also named entertainment co-chief Dana Walden as chief content officer and president, strengthening its creative leadership as it navigates technological disruption and shifting consumer habits.

D’Amaro, a nearly 30-year Disney veteran, currently runs the company’s most profitable division, which includes theme parks, cruises, and experiences. The unit generated nearly $10 billion in operating profit last fiscal year, accounting for close to 60% of Disney’s earnings. He will face challenges ranging from slowing international tourism to labor negotiations and the growing impact of generative AI on Hollywood.
