Home Assistant has rolled out a redesigned Overview dashboard aimed at making its self-hosted smart home platform easier to navigate. The update replaces the older default home screen with a cleaner interface built around three main sections: Favorites, Areas, and Summaries.
The new layout highlights frequently used devices in a Favorites panel, offering quick control access without digging through menus. The Summaries section groups devices by category—such as lights, climate systems, media players, and security—while also displaying a weather widget and a shortcut to configure newly discovered devices. Users can tap a “Devices discovered” button to see unconfigured hardware and launch a guided setup process.
Another key addition is the Areas section, which organizes smart devices by room. Selecting a room opens a focused dashboard showing relevant lights, scenes, and controls for that space. The streamlined design aims to reduce the complexity that has historically been a barrier for some users considering Home Assistant as an alternative to mainstream ecosystems.
Despite the new default layout, customization remains central to the platform. Users can modify the dashboard through the graphical interface or with YAML configuration files, and the previous Overview screen can still be restored through settings.
The update reflects Home Assistant’s ongoing push to improve usability while maintaining its open-source, self-hosted approach. Although the platform still requires more setup than typical consumer smart home systems, the redesigned dashboard is intended to make everyday control more accessible.
