Nvidia is close to finalising a deal to invest about $20 billion in OpenAI as part of the AI startup’s latest fundraising, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. OpenAI is seeking to raise as much as $100 billion, a round that could value the maker of ChatGPT at roughly $830 billion, underscoring the scale of capital flowing into artificial intelligence.

The potential investment comes amid intensifying competition among technology and investment groups to secure closer ties with OpenAI. Companies such as Amazon and SoftBank Group are also pursuing partnerships, betting that alignment with OpenAI will offer strategic advantages in the AI race. The Nvidia deal has not yet been finalised, the source said.

The talks follow months of negotiations after earlier plans for a far larger Nvidia investment stalled. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has said the company intends to make a significant commitment to OpenAI, while OpenAI chief Sam Altman has reiterated that Nvidia remains a key supplier of the world’s most advanced AI chips, even as OpenAI explores alternatives.
