Spain has ordered prosecutors to investigate X, Meta and TikTok over the alleged spread of AI-generated child sexual abuse material, marking a significant escalation in Europe’s scrutiny of major technology platforms.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced the move following a government technical report that highlighted growing risks linked to AI-generated content. Officials said authorities cannot allow algorithms to amplify harmful material that threatens children’s safety, privacy and dignity.

The investigation forms part of a broader regulatory push targeting online platforms over harmful content and design practices. Spanish authorities cited concerns that AI tools could be used to generate and distribute illegal material at scale.

The development comes amid mounting international pressure on big tech companies. European regulators are already reviewing platforms under digital services rules, while Ireland has opened an investigation into X’s AI chatbot Grok over its handling of personal data and its potential to create harmful imagery.

Spain’s government also noted that AI-generated fake images affecting minors are becoming increasingly common, prompting calls for stronger safeguards.
