Microsoft is reportedly preparing one of the most requested Windows 11 features: the ability to move and resize the taskbar. According to reports from Windows Central and Windows expert Zac Bowden, the long-missing customization option could return in a future update, potentially arriving in 2026.
If implemented, Windows 11 users would be able to move the taskbar to the top, left, or right side of the screen—bringing back functionality that had been standard in Windows for decades. The option disappeared when Windows 11 launched, frustrating many users who relied on flexible taskbar placement in previous versions.
The upcoming change is also expected to introduce taskbar resizing. Users should be able to adjust the size of the bar itself, with icons dynamically scaling up or down depending on the selected size. This would give users more control over screen space and visual layout, especially on large or ultrawide monitors.
Microsoft will likely need to rework several core interface elements to support these new positions. Features such as the Start menu, Copilot integration, notifications, and system tray controls would need to function properly regardless of whether the taskbar sits at the bottom, top, or sides of the display.
Although Microsoft has not officially confirmed the feature, sources indicate the company is targeting a 2026 release window. The update could arrive as early as summer if development stays on schedule.
The potential return of a movable taskbar comes as Microsoft continues trying to persuade users to upgrade from Windows 10, which remains widely used despite approaching end-of-support deadlines. Restoring familiar customization options may help address some long-standing user complaints about Windows 11’s design limitations.
