Sony Group is increasing prices for its PlayStation 5 consoles globally, citing rising component costs driven by supply pressures in the semiconductor market.
The price hike includes a $100 increase in the United States, bringing the standard PS5 to $649.99. The Digital Edition will now cost $599.99, while the higher-end PS5 Pro is priced at $899.99. The PlayStation 5 accessories are also affected, with the PlayStation Portal remote player rising to $249.99.
The move reflects broader industry dynamics, where demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure is pushing memory chip manufacturers to prioritize higher-margin data center components. This shift has reduced supply availability for consumer electronics such as gaming consoles.
Similar price increases will be implemented across Europe and Japan, following what Sony described as a careful assessment of global supply chain pressures.
Analysts expect the higher prices to weigh on console demand, particularly as sales have already shown signs of slowing. In the latest holiday quarter, PS5 sales declined year over year, highlighting a more challenging environment for the gaming market.
